Pronunciamiento del gobierno del DF respecto a la ley de Arizona y sus acciones a favor de los migrantes en este Estado
INFORME DE MIGRANTES - CIDH
IW NEWS ALERT
Dear friends,
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer had barely signed SB1070 into law when activists and politicians in other states began to talk about copying Arizona's notorious immigration law.
It’s far from clear whether any of these copycat efforts will bear fruit. Many state legislatures have already adjourned for the year, and the Arizona measure may face a court challenge even before it takes effect this summer
But that hasn’t stopped lawmakers in other states from threatening to take action.
UTAH
Republican Rep. Stephen Sandstrom told the Deseret News that he plans to draft a bill for the 2011 Utah legislative session that uses the Arizona law as a model. He claims his measure will build in protections against racial profiling.
Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has not yet taken a position on the proposal.
TEXAS
Republican Rep. Debbie Riddle has announced she will push for an Arizona-type law when the Texas legislature convenes in January. (She proposed a similar measure in 2009 – unsuccessfully.)
But Texas Gov. Rick Perry responded that a law akin to Arizona’s would “not be the right direction for Texas.’’ And his Democratic challenger, Bill White, agreed.
OHIO
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones has teamed up with Republican Rep. Courtney Combs to send a letter to Gov. Ted Strickland. It urges the governor to move a measure "that will mirror that of the illegal immigration legislation’’ passed in Arizona. Sheriff Jones is also promoting a “citizens initiative’’ for the Ohio ballot.
But Gov. Strickland says he will veto any Arizona-like measure that reaches his desk.
GEORGIA
Republican congressman, Rep. Nathan Deal, who is running for governor in Georgia this year, issued a press release saying that if he wins, he will “work to pass and sign" legislation similar to Arizona's. Deal was leading a charge in the House to repeal birthright citizenship, a bill that has gone nowhere.
MARYLAND
Republican Delegate Pat McDonough of Baltimore wants Maryland to pass an Arizona-type bill and plans to survey every candidate running for governor and for the state General Assembly to see if they agree with him.
PENNSYLVANIA
A group of lawmakers led by Republican Daryl Metcalfe and Democrat Harry Readshaw is promoting a bill that would require police officers to attempt to verify the immigration status of people suspected of being here illegally.
The measure, already moving in the House, would also create a new third-degree misdemeanor for illegal immigrants who violate federal law by not carrying proof of legal status.
Gov. Ed Rendell told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he hasn’t read the bill, but “if it’s the same as the Arizona law,” he said, “I would veto it.’’
